Will Power – How to Develop Will Power?

Will Power

How to develop will power? Read on. Every day, most of us struggle to keep ourselves on track whether in our routine jobs, or diet or working towards some bigger challenge.

For instance, when it comes to losing weight, you might be tempted to eat that yummy cookie stored in the glass jar or in the winter, you might coax yourself to stay a few more minutes in the warm bed in the morning even while you are becoming late or you might not find yourself motivated enough to pass the upcoming entrance exam.

What is all this about? This is just lack of will power and self-discipline. Despite the fact that you have the potential, you fail to achieve success only because of lack of will power.

An important tool to success, will power is your inner power and you can learn and develop it like any other important skill. However, it is important that you take a systematic approach to acquire this skill.

What is will power?

Scientifically speaking, will power is your ability to resist your impulses. Your inner strength helps you make decisions, execute and handle any task and keep moving towards your aim despite of all the difficulties and hardships getting in your way.

Commonly, it is will power that helps you resist all your temptations, laziness, and negative habits that act as hindrances to your action.

Self-discipline goes hand-in-hand with will power

Along with will power, self-discipline is another trait that you need to inculcate. Self-discipline is about rejection of any instant gratification to gain something more meaningful and for better goals. It is about your ability to stick to certain actions and behavior that lead to your improvement spiritually, mentally, physically and emotionally.

How to develop will power?

You need will power and self discipline, not only for achieving major goals and overall success, but also for making daily decisions like studying, going to school, the office, losing weight, eating healthy food, exercising, spiritual growth, carrying out your promises and almost everything. Here are some tips to developing will power

1. Refuse any unnecessary desires

The first step towards developing will power is to refuse to fulfill your “unimportant” and “unnecessary” desires.

To strengthen your inner power, you have intentionally act contrary to your habits or actions. With regular practice, you will see an improvement in your will power and self-discipline.

2. Avoid temptations

You can start right away by:

  • not eating any snack that you might be eating between breakfast and lunch or
  • drink just plain water when you desire to drink a soft drink or
  • you avoid watching your favorite TV program.

In the beginning, you might find it difficult to avoid your normal habits, but you will see within 2-3 days, you will start acquiring new habits.

3. Associate every action with a serious value

Try to find logic and an important value in all your decisions and actions. A value-based action requires less control as you will perform them as part of your values and rules.

4. Plan for challenges

Planning for every possible problem and challenge helps you be prepared for every situation and requires less control on your side.

5. Do not try to overachieve

Since you have a limited source of will power, make sure you do not take too many objectives at a time in your hands.

Other things you can do to develop your will power is to control your thoughts, break a longer task into smaller bits and give yourself time to recover if you are starting new task requiring your will power.
