What Does it Mean to Have Romantic Dreams About Someone

romantic dreams

Falling for you was like taking an afternoon nap. Promising myself only a brief slumber, but as soon as I had fallen, I was already dreaming. ~ Brice Unruh (Tweet this)

Romantic dreams (or dreaming of other people) are some of the most common dreams out there. In particular, while we sleep we often see someone we like or someone we have had a relationship with. So what do these romantic dreams mean? Is it just coincidence you keep dreaming about that cute guy or girl, or is there more to it?

It is no secret that our subconscious is a lot bigger and smarter than our conscious mind and while we are asleep it tries to talk to us. Understanding romantic dreams is not some kind of voodoo magic, it is as simple as understanding yourself better. It is actually a great exercise for developing intuition as well as a way for you to be in alignment with your true values and desires.

So what does it mean if you had romantic dreams about . . .

1. The person you are in a relationship with

This type of dream can really give you a clue about how to fix or improve your current relationship. Consider what you were doing and how you felt in the dream. Your intuition may be telling you to address a certain part of your relationship (or part of him) you are not particularly happy with. Or it may be telling you to do more of what does make you happy.

If you had a dream about something bad they did—like they cheated on you, it means you miss the intimacy you two used to share. If you dream that you are the one who cheats, you are probably afraid of losing them, so you make yourself wrong to mirror that fear.

The actual emotion you felt during the dream, not just the visualization, can also tell you a lot.

2. One of your exes

Many of us mistakenly think the only reason for dreaming of an “ex” is still having feeling towards them. It could be, but more often we dream of the past when we feel there is something unfinished. Maybe you didn’t say all you wanted to say to your “ex” so you didn’t get closer.

If your partner ended the relationship, it is likely that you were too surprised to react in an adequate way. If you ended it, you could feel guilty about not giving them another chance. In any case, don’t rush into any specific conclusions or actions. Think about whether it is worth talking to them or perhaps to end the internal connection for good. If you are pondering on that, have a look at this useful piece on how to get over your ex.

3. Someone you like

When we like someone and see them in our dreams, we want to think it means they like us back. For better or worse though, dreams only tell us what’s on our minds. If you see yourself in a positive dream with your crush, it may be your subconscious telling you how to act in order to get that positive thinking and positive outcome.

  • So if you talk with them and laugh at their jokes in your dream, try that in real life.
  • If you touch their hand or invite them to a party, try that in real life.
  • If you two have an adventure together . . . You get the drill?

If you dream about someone you like not liking you back or being with someone else, it doesn’t mean it will happen either. This could just be your own fears and insecurities you need to deal with. So find the strength to deal with them.

4. Someone famous

If the only place I could see you was in my dreams, I would sleep forever. ~ Unknown (Tweet this)

As a young teenager I was crazy in love with Leonardo Di Caprio, so after I had a dream about being invited to his birthday party, I immediately tried to find out what it means. Seeing famous people in your sleep is about what they represent to you.

At the time of this dream, I was just starting my business and was meeting a lot of important, successful people. Being pleasantly surprised and extremely nervous about Leo’s party (note he is important and successful) was my intuition’s way of telling me how I felt about my waking life. I was excited in the face of huge opportunities, but also scared I wasn’t going to be good enough.

This could also be translated in a romantic situation if there is someone out there you feel you are not good enough for. Generally, dreaming of famous people means you are in your stretch zone—it’s scary, but it’s good.

5. Sex with someone

Just like with your “ex”, romantic dreams about having sex with someone does not necessarily mean they attract you sexually. Sex is one of the most intimate physical activities that you only do with someone you admire. And that is what it means: you admire the person. So don’t freak out.

And finally remember what J. K. Rowling said:

It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.” (Tweet this)
