The 7 Point Checklist For Personal Success

Personal success is the most important kind of success. It doesn’t matter what your friends, family or colleagues think. It’s all about what you want. What’s going to make you happy. Which means telling you how to achieve your specific brand of personal success is hard. Because, well, there’s a lot of interpretation.

But what I can show you is some of the most key components of every day life. Those little things that you need to do every day to make sure you stay on the path to personal success. These aren’t just daily habits. They’re part of a bigger philosophy. One that puts you at the helm of your own life. That makes personal success all that more achievable.

Feel free to print this off, bookmark it, or write the points down to use as your own personal daily checklist. You’ll thank me for it later…

1. Love yourself

Yes, I know it’s a cliché. But it doesn’t matter. Because if you don’t do it, you will never really find personal success. Each day remember to be mindful of who you are, why you’re doing this and what you love about yourself.

Try:

  • Positive Affirmations
  • I Am Statements
  • Rewriting your goals
  • Listing 10 things you’re grateful for about yourself. You can keep a gratitude journal

The more you become in tune with yourself, the better you’re able to connect with those around you. And the more good you can put into the world.

2. Become outward facing

You’ve just looked inward at why you love yourself. Now it’s time to turn your attention outwards and look at your impact on the world. How what you’re doing makes the world a better place.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a life insurance salesman, a trash collector, a receptionist or President of the United States. Everything you do offers some good to the world. Find it and focus on it. When you start seeing how what you do benefits other people, you’re much more likely to find happiness and purpose in it.

3. Create small daily goals

There is a lot on emphasis of making goals so big that they stretch you. And your overall goal should be a big one. But the steps you take to achieve it shouldn’t be. Instead break down what you want to achieve into manageable, bite sized chunks that you can work towards without any worry.

For example, if you wanted to be a full-time blogger, that might break down to:

  • Contacting five blogs about guest posts
  • Creating all my content for next week
  • Finish the lead magnet for my e-mail list

All of which, when combined, can take you much closer to where you want to be.

4. Have a ruthless ‘Time’ policy

Your time is precious. And it’s the only part of your life I will ever tell you to be selfish with. Because it doesn’t matter who you are, or how much money you make, you can never get a single second of time back. So it pays to be conscious of how you spend it. Or, more to the point, make sure you’re not wasting it.

To do this I find having a policy on what you will spend your time on to be really useful. This year I decided to only spend my time on things that will help me grow my:

  • Business
  • Relationships
  • Network
  • Income
  • Knowledge
  • Purpose

If it doesn’t help me with one of those elements, I won’t do it. Simple as that. Define what it is that you want to spend your time on, and you’ll find yourself wasting less of it, and spending more on your own personal success.

5. Make yourself accountable

This might be personal success. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t involve other people. Making yourself, and your success, accountable to other people can really help you drive yourself forward. Especially if what you have to do when you fail isn’t enjoyable.

Once you’ve defined your goal (or your daily micro goal) tell someone that you’re going to do it. With the internet that’s never been easier either:

  • Post it on a forum
  • Join a mastermind group
  • Share it with friends on a Facebook message
  • Tweet it to your followers
  • E-mail it to everyone on your team

You might be a great person (and you really are), but you’re also the most likely to give yourself some slack. Putting that in the hands of other people is much more effective.

6. Set aside time for personal development

You’ve already decided on a policy for (and that you should be ruthless with) your time. And one of the most important ways to spend your time is on personal development. That is making yourself even more likely to achieve the personal success you’re seeking.

I don’t care how busy you are. How full your schedule is. You have at least five minutes to spend on yourself each day:

  • Watch a YouTube Video
  • Read a blog post
  • Listen to a podcast
  • Read two pages of your book
  • Download an Audible eBook

Anything you can to expand your knowledge and grow yourself towards your personal goals.

7. Step outside your comfort zone

Baz Luhrmann once said, “Do something everyday that scares you”. And, in the pursuit of your own personal success, this is an important step. You cannot grow inside your own comfort zone. It’s impossible. You end up stuck.

Instead, at least once a day, do something that scares you.

  • Ask for a phone number
  • Schedule a meeting with someone well above your pay grade
  • Go on a date
  • Try a new sport
  • Wear that jacket you think you might look stupid in
  • Eat some food that you would never even think of

It doesn’t have to be big. And it doesn’t even really have to be in line with your goals. You will always learn something from it that will help you in the long run. And make overcoming other fears much more manageable.
