Most of us live under the assumption that we know ourself the best, but it is actually the opposite. In testing situations our response surprises our own self. Either we deal with the situation in a courageous manner or we fall in a pit leaving us feeling guilty. This indicates lack of self awareness.
Once a person shared this experience with me. He still can’t believe his reaction and is searching for the reason of his reaction as noted below.
My friend is a calm and happy going person. He and his boss were having a tough relationship. One day they both started confronting each other. The boss said, “Do you know the power of my pen, one signature and you will be out of this office.” My friend who was in his 20’s at that time replied, “Do you know the power of my arms.”
He slapped his boss, instantly opened the door and started screaming that the boss was hitting him. That particular day my friend felt very happy and kept joking about the incident. But now when he thinks about it, he feels ashamed and guilty. He still doesn’t know what prompted him to slap his boss. He never loses his temperament but that day surprised him and he is still searching for an answer.
Due to lack of self awareness most of us stay confused in life and fail to identify our goal for the life.
How to identify Self
To identify self let’s do a simple exercise with an honest attempt. Pick up a pen and paper and start writing about your strong points. Do not limit yourself with number of words or points. It could be your external or internal strength.
Question yourself as simple as, “Do I look good when I wear a pink dress” or as complex as “Can I empathize with people easily”. The idea is to identify self-worth and not feel bad by degrading self. Identification of your strengths will help to value self which you might have. It will help in uncover your treasures and cover your weaknesses.
Many a time we choose a career which we do not enjoy and later regret. We get so caught up in life that it gets too late to take corrective steps.
Chetan Bhagat, the famous fiction writer, did engineering, moved on to the finance field to work for a reputed bank. Though he earned good money – something was still missing. He kept on thinking and one day realized that his first love was writing.
He left the job to follow his passion. Had he thought about it earlier he could have devoted all those years to satisfy his thrust. His self realization led to self awareness which brought immense self satisfaction. Today his achievements are world known.
In today’s competitive world we want to grab each and every opportunity without recognizing our strengths that lead to failures. Failures cause depression, stress and low self esteem. In order to regain our hidden qualities one has to rebuild one’s inner strength and good self esteem by following these few steps.
