Home gym – The Do’s and Don’ts of a Home Gym

Most of us dream of a perfect body to go with those stylish clothes we see while window shopping. However, we can’t always make it to the gym. Maybe you’ve got several reasons:

  • lack of time in our hectic work schedules,
  • expensive annual charges,
  • not being comfortable in crowded places or even
  • the distance.

A terrific solution to all this is a home gym—create a workout space of your own at home. Make your own exclusive gym with a onetime payment and use it always with no monthly/quarterly/annual charges!

Here are some Do’s and Don’ts to help you make a great home gym.

Do’s of a home gym

1. Do discuss with a professional (like a trainer or an equipment expert) your individual goals and the space that is available to you at home. Depending on the size of your space the expert will be able to suggest the most effective equipment. You want a place that is comfortable and not cramped.

2. Do some research on the equipment . . . checking on various brands, quality, pricing and most importantly the after-sales service being provided. Do, also, take your time to try out the various kinds of equipment to ensure they suit you and you enjoy using the same, before you spend your money.

3. Do include cardio workouts in your gym. The popular home choices here are the treadmill, stationary bikes, cross trainers and elliptical trainers. Be careful while choosing the quality of a cross trainer. Do buy a treadmill with at least 1.5 continuous horsepower and a good suspension system.

4. Do include some weights in your home gym. Strength training plays an integral part of your fitness routine. Do, also, get a couple of dumbbells of varying weights (depending on your fitness level).

5. Do use your gym regularly and don’t let it become just an idea you had. Ensure that you actually workout to get the benefit from it. In so many cases the treadmill handle bars become the ideal place to hang your clothes.

6. Do take your home gym as an investment so be sure you check the quality of the products.

7. Do try and get a personal trainer to start you off—especially if you have never worked out in a gym before.

Don’ts of a home gym

1. Don’t buy low-cost, low-quality treadmills. Remember a treadmill is something that you will be using every day. A good quality treadmill is a must. If you can afford one, make sure you buy a motorized treadmill.

2. Don’t buy used/secondhand equipment without thoroughly checking them out first. Take a friend who knows about these things with you to check them out.

3. Don’t get taken in by advertisements claiming miracle results from their products. At the end of the day it is a balance of diet and exercise that gives the results and nothing else. However enticing these products look they will not give the ridiculous results they show.

4. Don’t overdo your work out because just because you have a gym at home. Remember your body needs rest for the muscles to rebuild and to avoid wear-and-tear.

Hopefully these tips on setting up your home gym will help you make the right choice with equipment and workouts.
