The Power of Acceptance and Appreciation
Many women and even men, in and outside their homes and work environments often face situations that seem to be beyond their control. The power of acceptance starts working for you the minute you start appreciating the things you have in life. The power of acceptance is the first step in transformation. It is nothing but accepting ourselves, our life situations and having realistic expectations.
At this juncture, one needs to understand that whatever happens in the drama of life is perfectly accurate and beneficial for us. One needs to accept his shortcomings and improve upon them. There is no age for learning things. One needs to aim for perfection—perfection in the state of mind; so that no external influence may disturb its peace.
Priya was worried as her male colleague was constantly bothering her for a long time by crediting all the success in her career to her being a woman. She was so saddened by his constant criticism that after a while of bullying she chose to avoid him and later, even started developing the feeling of not going in to work.
This is an example of how are we affected by our external environment. The effect is so strong that at times, it tends to influence our belief system. In the above case, Priya starts to believe that, whatever her peer is portraying her as, is true and she refuses to realize and accept the reality behind his gesture.
In the above example, Priya could have very well altered the situation by explaining to her colleague what difficulties she faces being a working woman. Also, how aptly she has overcome them and come out with flying colors in her family and professional life.
The power of acceptance is nothing but accepting ourselves, our family members, our life situations and having realistic expectations.
The power of acceptance can be summed up with the old Zen saying, “If you understand, things are just as they are. If you do not understand, things are just as they are.”
Power of Acceptance – A Way of Life
Just surrendering to the situation is not the solution. One needs to accept and appreciate each moment of life. It has been seen that individuals who have been constant achievers cannot accept even a single failure.
A student, Ram, who had been at the top of his class from grades 1 to 10, could not accept that his classmate out-ranked him in grade 11.
He was upset with the results to such an extent, that he stopped talking to his childhood friend and turned irritable. At this point, Ram needs to accept that his friend has worked hard enough to succeed well in the exam. He can very well regain his lost position by studying systematically in the future.
Gratitude
Past incidents in life stimulate our thoughts in the present. It is up to us, to appreciate and accept things believing whatever happened, happened for our own good, giving us a lesson to learn from. This feeling of gratitude not only makes life easier but elates us from just feeling happy to actually being happy.
Though it is difficult to appreciate every incident of life, you need to realize that whatever has happened was nothing unrealistic. Such things happen with others too and life does not come to an end. To forgive and forget is very important in certain situations.
It is earnestly important to discover the beauty and miracle of life. With your exceptional determination, you can control how much pain you create for yourself and for how long. Accepting the present situation is a prerequisite to any improvement.
Appreciation
Appreciating someone does not mean praising one’s unworthy deeds as well but it is important to understand that we can help someone get rid of his bad habits by appreciating the brighter side of his personality.
Appreciation is a wonderful thing. It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well. ~ Voltaire (Tweet this)
Being harsh with someone for his unwanted habits, makes us pass even more negative energy to him. This does not allow the person to grow, not even a good habit. For it you need loving and compassionate energy and that is through appreciation.
