Qualities Of A Good Mother And Her Transformation
Transformation of a mother? Is it possible? No one would believe this, but it’s true. Have you ever thought that today’s educated mother is the result of uneducated mothers who wanted to empower their daughters with education and independence.
Mothers blessed us with real gems
Sit calmly and think for a while how mothers in the past groomed great personalities like Jhansi ki Rani Laxmi Bai, Pratibha Patil, Indira Gandhi, Kiran Bedi, Swami Vivekananda, Shahid Bhagat Singh, Lal Bahadur Shastri. The list is endless. These people have been the epitomes of the qualities that were imbibed in them by their great mothers. So what are the qualities of a mother?
What are the qualities of a mother?
Mother is an essence of strength and truthfulness. She is a fountain of love, is as strong as Himalaya, has a heart as big as an ocean, is as pure as lotus, is as spiritual as Maa Yashoda and is a treasure of values.
How mothers cultivated us?
Our grandmothers or great grandmothers were not educated; still they were women of substance. They were able to bring up their children and cultivate human values. The children had full respect for their elders and never dared to confront them.
I remember every evening when we brothers and sisters sat together for food. My mother used to constantly sing prayers while cooking and feeding us. After dinner, our grandmother used to tell us religious or patriotic stories.
The most loved ones were Dhruv Bhagat, Lord Rama, Krishna, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Sharvan Kumar and numerous other short stories that subconsciously got embossed in our tender hearts. Through this they were inculcating human values like honesty, respect for our elders/ family, spiritual values and love for all.
The dream of an uneducated mother
In the era when only sons were expected to go to school, mothers from the core of their heart wanted the daughters to be educated and financially independent. Despite all odds, they educated their daughters which led to the birth of today’s modern and educated Mother.
Achievements of an educated daughter
It is a matter of pride that today’s mothers fulfilled the dreams of their mother and have not only achieved the heights in the corporate world, politics and the government but captured space also. Kalpna Chawla is inspiration for all. Today’s mother is serving on all levels and is financially strong.
Her financial status provided her and her family all the modern comforts and a good education to her children.
Qualities of a good mother: changing priorities
As the achievements are increasing of the modern mother so are the stress levels. High official priorities and a commitment to family is building up stress.
Since work can’t be ignored the family takes a back seat therefore so do the children and their requirements. The responsibility of raising the child is being passed on to the grannies, maids, day care centers or the boarding schools.
To cope, children are keeping themselves occupied with TV, Internet, Facebook or PlayStations. The materialistic comforts of life are replacing the comfort and warmth of hug, cooperation, patience, love, and guidance when needed most.
The innocence of today’s children is getting lost; aggression and violence is taking a front seat. An urge to get everything within a short span of time without much effort is leading to high rate of crime.
Need of the hour
Today’s need of the hour is to maintain a healthy balance between yesterday’s mother and today’s mother. A healthy mix of both qualities of a mother is imperative.
Let’s make our children treasure a household of values and qualities and let’s blend the old with new. A few suggestions will help us in doing so:
- Educate the child spiritually
- Hug the child every night before sleeping
- Take out 15 mins to read bedtime stories
- Inculcate the value of money
- Adopt valuable methods of parenting learned from your grandparents.
I am sure a new era will come that will generate enthusiasm, freshness, loyalty, honesty, truthfulness, love and respect in today’s children and we will again get Kalpna Chawla, Sardar Patel, Subhash Chander Bose and many more who will make their mothers proud. Let’s be thankful to God to have blessed us with great mothers (and even a few fathers who have displayed the qualities of a good mother).
