Being organized is one of the most important aspects in becoming successful. However, it’s a reality that most of us are not organized whether it is our homes, offices, minds or work. This habit of staying unorganized leads to irritation and frustration. Actually, I have gone through this situation and learned it the hard way to get organized and stay organized.

I lost one of my important projects because I could not find the documents I needed to show at presentation time. That is why I want to share a few little secrets on how to get organized in life—in fact all walks of your life both physically and mentally.

However, do not expect to learn it all in one shot; it will take time to develop good habits. Right! These are, in fact, habits not secrets.

Get rid of clutter before organizing

The most important thing when you start organizing your house, cupboards, or desk is to get rid of the clutter that has accumulated. This is the biggest challenge because you might think that everything you have is useful to you. You need to follow a strategy that is to reduce, eliminate and simplify. You simply need to keep the things that you love to have or that are useful to you.

Organize your mind; write it down

The above rule applies to your work also; focus only on your most important tasks for that day. Although our mind tends to store everything, it forgets certain important details when you need them. The best way to get organized mentally is to write down the ideas and thoughts as they come. It is better to organize your ideas or tasks by writing them down on a piece of paper. With a clearly written to-do list, it is sure that you will not forget anything.

Specify a place for everything

Organizing means allotting a place for everything; you need to create a proper place for each item, like every time place your pens in a certain holder after you use them or place your files in the right cabinet. You can even place labels on those cabinets or drawers to help you remember.

Therefore, whenever, you see anything lying anywhere homeless, just pick it up and place it at its right place. Similarly, you can organize your work life by creating different pages and folders in your computer such as for your goals, notes on projects, to-do list and more. It helps you prioritize your tasks.

Develop the habit to do it right now

Most often, people tend to pick things and keep them on tables or counter-tops with a thought that they will put it away later. However, it takes just a few seconds to put things in their place when you actually grab them. Initially, you may have to force yourself to put everything in its place the moment you have finished using it but gradually, it will become your habit.

Create a system and routine

Once you are organized and have kept everything in its place, you will love the beauty of being organized. However, after a while, you will see that it is becoming disorganized and cluttered once again.

The basic thing is, you need to develop some kind of system to keep things organized and create a routine to run those systems. You can get organized now and stay organized for life. For instance, make it a routine to throw away clutter once a month, say on the last Sunday of the month; follow this routine. Similarly, develop a routine for everything, for laundry, errands, other schedules, exercise and other things.
