Goals – The Key to Success

What is Success? The dictionary definition of the word ‘Success’ is ‘the favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors; the accomplishment of one’s goals.’ Is there a link between success and happiness? Does Success mean the same thing for everyone? Does it have to mean the same thing for everyone?

Success and Happiness

Success means different things to different people. To some, success might mean earning a six-digit salary; to some it might mean the smiling face of their child while for some it may simply be a clean and well-managed home. Whatever makes a person feel successful and experience inner happiness is important. It is crucial for us to know what it is that makes us feel successful as it has a direct impact on our sense of well-being.

When we feel successful, we experience positive emotions such as contentment, happiness and tranquility. There are facets to our personality that we don’t even understand or know about consciously. Many times, this makes us run around in circles and feel disoriented.

If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal, not to people or things. ~ Albert Einstein (Tweet this)

If a person were to run after wealth and material achievements since everyone else seems to be doing the same without really checking if wealth and material ambitions were actually the things he truly values, he would not experience satisfaction or fulfillment even after achieving material wealth.

Reflect upon your goals in life and know them clearly. This inner work will also help you achieve those very goals in an easier manner than you would otherwise. There is no need to judge or be critical about your goals once you identify them as long as they are positive goals and don’t hurt anyone else’s interests.

Changing your goals after getting influenced by others is not such a great idea since it is you who needs to feel happy and successful at the end of the day and not the other party.

Case Study

A Life-Changing Experience

Aman fell in love with his son the minute he was born. Though he was quite ambitious before this life-changing moment, his priorities underwent a drastic change almost immediately after he saw the face of his new-born son. He spent loads of quality time with him at home and cut down his office hours as much as possible.

Though his wife, Savita did not approve of his casual attitude to work and money matters, he could not help but be himself and focus on his son instead. It took Savita some time to come to terms with her husband’s changed priorities, but she understood and respected Aman’s choices when she saw how much happier he had become after the birth of their son.

Both of them spent loads of quality time with their son and made the necessary adjustments to their lifestyle in keeping with Aman’s earnings.

Conclusion

Know what constitutes Success for you since it will directly impact how fulfilled you feel at the end of the day. It is not necessary that your goals remain constant throughout your lifetime. In accordance with your experiences and stages of life, your goals may also undergo changes. Stay in touch with yourself and know your definition of Success to increase your sense of inner well-being.
