Your attitude matters! This is an instance from my life to demonstrate the same. A friend of mine had been the brightest star amongst all since early days. We had been together for a long time. For all his laurels he was tagged with the ’happy go lucky’ label, by all the on-lookers of his success. As time passed, we finished high school and eventually lost touch but I kept hearing of his success time and again.
It was after a gap of around a decade that we happened to confront each other suddenly. The friend after graduating from a top notch college and working for a couple of years still didn’t look that happy as anybody else would have been if he were in his shoes.
On querying what made him look mournful, he replied in a rather dejected voice that things at his end were not going the way as they appeared to others. He continued that his different bosses for years now had not been considerate and understanding, salary issues and project deadlines were taking their toll on him. The work pressure had been affecting his health.
As we had been close and old acquaintances, he shared his personal woes too. He added that he had family problems too bothering him for a long time. With aging parents, younger siblings and toddlers at home he was finding it difficult to manage along.
After listening to him, I wondered if it was really right to call this a predicament. This is a common situation that every other person in the crowd goes through at one or the other point in life. Though, I agree that we all have different capabilities and capacity to deal with the circumstances we confront but, I strongly believe that the world appears the way we look at it. If we put on colored glasses, the world around looks colorful and if we put on dark glasses, the world will look undoubtedly dull and colorless.
Here are some observations to show that attitude matters and how you can develop a positive attitude.
The Driving Force
The driving force behind one’s success is nothing external but one’s own attitude. Your attitude matters. You are what you think.
The more you feel hopeful towards anything; the whole energy of the universe starts to concentrate itself in turning that hope into a reality.
If your attitude is positive, success automatically starts following you; you never need to run after it.
Another point I would like to bring forth from my friend’s story is that despite being an intelligent person with a high IQ level, what he lacked was ‘Emotional Intelligence’. We all need to strike a balance between work and home.
In the words of Bryan Dyson, CEO Coca Cola, “Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the air. You name them – work, family, health, friends and spirit and you’re keeping all of these in the air. You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. But the other four Balls – Family, Health, Friends and Spirit – are made of glass. If you drop one of these; they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same. You must understand that and strive for Balance in your life.”
Accepting and learning from one’s failures is an art. Not all of us do it. But yes, all of us CAN do it. It has been seen that if someone has been a consistent achiever, for him accepting a sudden failure, mistake or error becomes an ego issue. At this stage, I would say that one should understand that there is a fine line of demarcation between ego and self-respect. Also, in accepting one’s own failure or errors, no self-respect is hampered. It is just a way to improve oneself.
As far as health being affected due to work pressure is concerned, it is an important matter to be taken care of. We all have only twenty-four hours a day. The more we utilize these twenty-four hours tactically, the better will be the outcome. Your body and soul too need your time the way your work needs it. As they say ’Health is wealth’. Priorities need to be fixed in your daily life.
Attitude matters – Conclusion
So, at the end I culminate, be it my friend or anybody else walking the face of earth, what makes us all drive is our attitude. Always remember, a positive attitude will make you drive ahead while a negative one will take you in the rear direction. Decide what you want. Your attitude matters!
